Typing Course
The Typing Course is a structured, 13-lesson curriculum designed to take you from a beginner to a master of touch typing. It covers everything from the home row to advanced symbols and Shift key mastery.
Your performance in each lesson is tracked by your best accuracy score:
- 🟢 Green: 90% or higher (Mastered)
- 🟡 Yellow: 70% to 89% (Good, but needs practice)
- 🔴 Red: Below 70% (Focus on accuracy over speed)
Yes! If you are signed in with Google, your highest accuracy and progress for each lesson are automatically saved to your profile and synced across all your devices.
Lessons are unlocked sequentially. Once you complete an exercise with any accuracy score, you can progess to the next row. We recommend achieving a Green (90%+) rating before moving to the next lesson category.
Quick Mode
Quick Mode is a lightweight, high-performance interface designed for zero distractions. Access it directly at typingtestgo.com. It bypasses the dashboard, shop, and rewards to get you typing in milliseconds.
Yes! Quick Mode is built for speed users:
- Tab + Enter: Instantly restart the test.
- Esc: Clear current input.
- 1, 2, 3, 4: Quick-switch between 1, 5, 10, and 30 minute timers.
Quick Mode is designed for anonymous speed trials and does not sync to your global XP or Leaderboard profile. Use the Main Dashboard if you want to earn points and climb the ranks.
Practice & Improvement
Month 1: Learn proper finger placement, practice 30 mins daily, focus on accuracy (95%+)
Month 2: Increase to 45 mins daily, practice common words and phrases, target 30 WPM
Month 3: Practice 60 mins daily, take timed tests, target 40 WPM
Consistency is key - daily practice beats occasional long sessions.
From beginner level (20 WPM), it typically takes 4-6 months of consistent daily practice (45-60 minutes) to reach 60 WPM. From intermediate (40 WPM), you can reach 60 WPM in 2-3 months.
Best practices include:
- Use proper touch typing technique (correct finger placement)
- Practice 30-60 minutes daily consistently
- Don't look at the keyboard
- Focus on accuracy first, then speed
- Take regular typing tests to track progress
- Use online tools like TypingTestGo for structured practice
Always focus on accuracy first. Aim for 95%+ accuracy before trying to increase speed. High accuracy builds muscle memory correctly and prevents bad habits. Speed naturally increases as your accuracy improves.
Starting from beginner level, you need approximately 40-60 hours of focused practice spread over 2-3 months (30-45 minutes daily) to consistently achieve 40 WPM with good accuracy.

Improve accuracy by:
- Slowing down initially - type at a comfortable pace
- Using correct finger for each key without exception
- Looking at the screen, not the keyboard
- Practicing difficult letter combinations repeatedly
- Taking breaks to avoid fatigue-induced errors
- Reviewing and learning from your common mistakes
Touch typing is typing without looking at the keyboard. You rely on muscle memory to know where each key is. Touch typists rest their fingers on the home row (ASDF for left hand, JKL; for right hand) and use specific fingers for specific keys.
No! Looking at the keyboard while typing is one of the biggest obstacles to improving speed. Train yourself to keep eyes on the screen. It may be slow initially, but you'll develop muscle memory and eventually type much faster than hunt-and-peck method.
Home Row Position:
- Left pinky: A
- Left ring: S
- Left middle: D
- Left index: F
- Right index: J
- Right middle: K
- Right ring: L
- Right pinky: ; (semicolon)
- Thumbs: Spacebar
F and J keys have small bumps to help you find home position without looking.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Don't use wrong fingers for keys
- Don't look at keyboard
- Don't slouch - maintain proper posture
- Don't practice for hours without breaks
- Don't ignore accuracy for speed
- Don't skip warm-up exercises
For practice, a standard QWERTY keyboard is best. Mechanical keyboards are preferred by many for their tactile feedback. However, practice on the same type of keyboard you'll use in tests. Ergonomic keyboards can help with comfort during long practice sessions.
Absolutely yes! While younger learners may progress slightly faster, adults can definitely improve typing speed at any age with consistent practice. Focus on proper technique and daily practice - age is not a barrier to reaching 40-60 WPM.
Typing Speed Benchmarks
Yes, 30 WPM is good for complete beginners (0-6 months practice). It shows you've learned basic typing and can type faster than handwriting (13-20 WPM). However, aim to improve to 40+ WPM for professional use.
40 WPM is the average typing speed globally. It's acceptable for most office jobs and meets minimum requirements for many government exams. For professional advancement, aim for 50+ WPM.
50 WPM is above average and considered "good" professional speed. It's faster than 60-70% of typists and suitable for most administrative and office positions.
Yes, 60 WPM is definitely professional level. It's in the "fast" category and qualifies you for positions requiring strong typing skills like executive assistant, court clerk, or data entry specialist.
Yes, 80 WPM is very fast and puts you in the top 5-10% of all typists. This speed qualifies you for advanced positions like transcriptionist or professional typist.
Yes, 100 WPM is achievable with dedicated practice (usually 1-2 years). It's considered elite level and places you in the top 1% of typists. Professional writers and stenographers often reach this speed.
The global average typing speed is 38-40 WPM with about 92% accuracy. This includes all skill levels from beginners to professionals.
The world record for typing speed is 216 WPM, set by Stella Pajunas in 1946. Modern verified records on standard keyboards range from 160-200 WPM for short bursts.
Professional typists typically type 65-95 WPM. Executive assistants average 60-80 WPM, while legal and medical transcriptionists often exceed 80-100 WPM.
For general office work, 40-50 WPM is considered good. For administrative roles, 50-60 WPM is preferred. For specialized typing roles, 60+ WPM is expected.
Data entry jobs typically require 50-80 WPM with high accuracy (95%+). Entry-level positions may accept 50-60 WPM, while experienced positions expect 60-80 WPM or higher.
Below 30 WPM is generally considered slow for adults. Hunt-and-peck typists typically range from 20-35 WPM. For professional contexts, anything below 40 WPM is considered slow.
Government & International Exams
Requirements vary by post, but common benchmarks include:
- SSC CHSL/CGL: 35-40 WPM (English) or 30-35 WPM (Hindi).
- Banking (IBPS/SBI): 30-40 WPM depending on the post.
- Railways (RRB): 30-35 WPM for clerical positions.
- Court/Civil Service: 40-50 WPM for assistants; 80+ WPM for stenographers.
For computer-based exams like IELTS or PTE Academic, while there is no "minimum" typing requirement, a speed of 35-40 WPM is recommended to ensure you can complete the writing tasks comfortably within the time limit.
Net Speed = Gross Speed - (Errors / Time)
Gross Speed is total characters divided by 5, then by time. Errors represent incorrect words or skipped characters. Most exams require 95%+ accuracy to pass.
Yes, most modern exams (SSC, Banking, Civil Service) allow the use of Backspace. However, excessive use will lower your Gross WPM. Aim for accuracy to avoid needing it frequently.
For most government posts, the typing test is qualifying in nature. Failing it means disqualification from that specific post, even if you passed the written exam. You can usually re-apply in the next recruitment cycle.
